Another fine example of the explorations and research of the ceramist and sculptor Helmut Schaffenacker (1921-2010) is this large decorative wall plaque depicting the Rialto Bridge and gondolas. Beautiful polychrome enamels. Good condition. Workshop stamp ("Schäffenacker – Ulm/Do. – Made in Germany – handgeformt"). 31 cm square x 5 cm high.
Helmut Schäffenacker was born on July 5, 1921, in Ulm, Germany, into a family of artists: his father was the painter Otto Schäffenacker. He completed his initial training, then further training in sculpture with Rudolf Pauschinger in Stuttgart, and in 1948 opened his own studio, "Atelier Schäffenacker," in Ulm.
He worked with various materials: ceramics (vases, wall reliefs), wood sculpture, stone, metal, and paint. From the 1950s onward, he became known for his wall panels in His ceramics, initially with relief, later evolved from purely figurative forms to more abstract ones. Around 1960, he established his studio in Ulm-Böfingen, equipped with several ceramic kilns and employing up to ten people. He ceased ceramic production in 1993 (dismantling the kilns) but continued to exhibit in other media. He died on August 19, 2010, in Ulm.
