"Oil On Oak Panel, Christ On The Cross. Flanders, Late 16th Century. "
Oil painting on oak panel depicting the crucifixion of Christ on Golgotha. We see a crucified Christ at peace, already crowned with a radiant halo. The anatomical treatment and the loincloth are perfectly executed. He is nailed at three points, his two feet overlapping. At the foot of the cross is the memento mori, represented by the skull and the two crossed tibias. Below, we see the city of Jerusalem, and above, the solar eclipse on the left, observed by the moon on the right. The presence of visible craquelure and old cracks does not detract from this beautiful work, which is in good overall condition. The back shows a fine oak panel with a label from an old collection. Flanders, late 16th century (later frame dating from the late 19th or early 20th century).
