Alfred Dubucand (1828-1903) Bronze Sculpture "hunting Dog On Point".

Artist: Alfred Dubucand.
Alfred Dubucand, Sculptor of Hunting Scenes. Born in Paris on November 25, 1828, an engraver by training and profession, Alfred Dubucand only turned to sculpture in the 1860s after working in the studios of Antoine Louis Barye and Pierre Louis Rouillard. At the Salon of 1867, he was 39 years old. Riding the wave of animal sculpture, he exhibited a wax Pheasant. The sculpture having met with some success, he presented it again at the following Salon, this time in bronze. He would henceforth proceed in this way, exhibiting sculptures first in wax and then, assured of public interest, casting them in bronze. He was awarded a third class medal at the Salon of 1879. With remarkable regularity, he was present at every Salon until 1883. Alfred Dubucand's work is expressed around the theme of hunting, horses but also through orientalist groups where he stages the Maghreb fauna, with humans. Less well-known than Antoine-Louis Barye, Pierre-Jules Mène, or Emmanuel Frémiet, his attention to detail and his ability to capture suspended movement, along with the finesse and elegance of his chiseling, place him among the great animal sculptors. He retired in the second half of the 1880s to Châteaudun, to his house at 28 rue Nationale, where he died at the age of 74. The Hunting Dog on Point: At a standstill, its gaze fixed on the distance, the sculptor captured that moment when, still uncertain of whether or not it had spotted prey, the dog freezes. Its slender, refined silhouette is elegant. Alfred Dubucand rendered the dog's lean, sinewy limbs, frozen in its effort, with a striking touch. The elongated composition evokes restrained movement. The chiseling is fine and refined, revealing the great precision of each detail, particularly the dog's muzzle. Signed on the base: DUBUCAND. Antique bronze sculpture with a brown patina.
