Period: Late 19th Century. Condition: Excellent. Material: Wool. Width: 173cm. Height: 240cm. Depth: 0.5cm. Helen was the daughter of Zeus and Leda, and was considered the most beautiful woman in the world. She was married to King Menelaus of Sparta. Paris, Prince of Troy, was the son of Priam and Hecuba, King and Queen of Troy. The Origin of the Incident: The myth recounts that during a beauty contest between the goddesses—Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite—Zeus chose Paris as the judge. Each goddess promised him a gift: Hera: power and wealth; Athena: wisdom and military victory; Aphrodite: the love of the most beautiful woman in the world. Paris chose Aphrodite, who promised him Helen. Thus began the tragic destiny of Troy. The Abduction: According to most versions: Paris traveled to Greece, to Sparta, under the pretext of a diplomatic or commercial visit. Helen, captivated by his beauty and charmed by Aphrodite, left Menelaus willingly or was abducted by Paris, according to some versions. Paris took Helen to Troy, which was considered an act of treason and a major affront to the Greeks. As a consequence, Menelaus, humiliated and furious, calls upon the Greek kings to assemble to avenge his honor and recover Helen. This leads directly to the Trojan War, which lasts ten years and is the subject of Homer's Iliad.
