Portrait of a Woman
Painting, oil on canvas

Painting: 54 x 65 cm
19th-century frame: 65.5 x 76.5 cm
Very good condition, relined
Circa 1845-50
Note: This painting is related to the famous painting in the Musée d'Orsay, The Romans of the Decadence, which was a success at the Paris Salon of 1847. Its success was such that many clients and friends asked Thomas Couture for studies used in the creation of the painting and for paintings with figures in the style of the Salon painting. Our painting is either a study not used for this painting, or a commissioned work inspired by one of the female figures with ivy headdresses in the Musée d'Orsay painting.
