Paul Dubois (1829-1905) - Bronze Study or Meditation. Bronze with a brown patina depicting an elderly man seated in a posture of reflection: his left hand supports his head, a sign of meditation, while his other hand rests on a book or lectern. The sculpture is entitled "Study and Meditation." It is one of four allegorical figures (virtues) sculpted by Paul Dubois for the cenotaph of General de Lamoricière, erected in Nantes Cathedral. Signed F. Barbedienne, Foundryman, Paris, at the base. Inscription "Grateful Homage." Signed on the back: P. Dubois. Paul Dubois was one of the most highly regarded French sculptors and painters of the late 19th century. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in the studio of Armand Toussaint, then traveled to Italy where he discovered Renaissance sculpture, a decisive influence on his elegant and harmonious style.
