Holy Face Of Jesus, Rome 1886, Vatican Certified Devotional Image, Veil Of Veronica

Rare 19th-century sacred image of the Holy Face of Jesus (Vera Effigies Sacri Vultus Domini Nostri Jesu Christi), made in Rome in 1886. This is an official Vatican devotional image, touched to the Holy Relics kept in St Peter’s Basilica — including the Veil of Veronica, a fragment of the True Cross, and the Lance of Longinus — and therefore classified as a true devotional reliquary image.

The print bears the traditional Holy Face on the Sudarium, with the original blue Vatican stamp, the “GRATIS” distribution stamp, and the red wax seal. On the reverse is the complete printed Latin certificate of authentication, dated 1886, with the corresponding red wax seal and the handwritten signature of a Canon of St Peter’s Basilica.

A rare feature is its small-format frame, measuring only 23.5 cm × 20 cm, much scarcer than the more common large examples. It remains in its original 19th-century black-painted wooden frame. The glass is cracked, and the frame shows expected age wear, but the image, certificate, and seals remain complete and historically untouched.

Good condition for age, with typical wear consistent with devotional objects of this period.

Partial translation of the Latin certificate (for clarity):

“We, the Canon Keeper of the Holy Relics of the Vatican Basilica of St Peter, declare that this image of the Holy Face of Our Lord Jesus Christ has been touched to the Most Holy Relics of the Veil of Veronica, the Most Holy Wood of the Cross, and the Most Sacred Spear; in witness whereof we have signed and sealed this document. Rome, 1886.”
