Very fine portrait of a nobleman in a landscape – Northern European School, 19th century, after portraits painted around 1620/1630. In Northern Europe, the wearing of the so-called "confusion ruff" was very fashionable in the 1620s/1630s.
The "confusion ruff" is an unstarched ruff, with several rows, much less rigid, falling over the shoulders as a collar, then as large turned-down collars, and finally as a turned-down collar edged with lace (Louis XIII style).
