A little history...
Sphinxes were very fashionable throughout the 18th century on the terraces of royal and princely castles. Bearing the features of the King's favorites, the most famous that have survived to this day are those adorning the main building of the Château de Ménars, representing the Marquise de Pompadour. In stone, terracotta, and lead, the subject existed in numerous variations, which testify to its popularity.
