The artist demonstrates a restrained mastery of light and atmosphere, with a delicately rendered cloudy sky reflected in the calm waters on the horizon. In the foreground, a haystack and a few stones add a touch of authentic rural life. The palette, dominated by shades of gray, soft blues, and ochres, evokes the particular luminosity of Brittany.
The realistic treatment and careful execution testify to a solid academic training. This work belongs to the tradition of French regionalist painters of the interwar period, committed to preserving in their art the beauty of landscapes and vernacular architecture threatened by modernization.
The work is signed and dated lower left. It is in good overall condition, despite a network of light craquelure consistent with its age. The canvas, previously loose, has been re-stretched with wax (visible on the back), and slight undulations remain in the upper section. There is also an old repair visible on the back, but not visible from the front.
The work is displayed in a modern light wood frame, highlighted with a blue molding, in very good condition.
