VILLENEUVE (Arnaud de), CURION - CRELL - PICTORIUS (Jean-Jacques-Georges) - De conservanda bona valetudine Opusculum Scholae Salernitanae, ad Regem Angliae: cum Arnoldi Novicomensis, Medici & Philosoph antiqui Enarrationibus utilissimis, denuo recognitis & auctis per Ioan. Curionem, & Jacob. Crellium. Paris, Chez Jérôme Marnef & Guillaume Vavelat, 1575; 12mo, 488 pp., modern full black morocco binding, spine with three raised bands, marbled edges. New edition, entirely in Latin, which was first printed around 1480 in Leuven, with notes attributed to Arnaud de Villeneuve. The sources of these medical precepts are to be found around the 11th century. They were easily memorized verses. The most famous version of this text is the one with notes by Curion and Cress, about whom almost nothing is known, and which was first printed in 1545, then with more extensive commentary from 1555 onwards. There were more than forty editions from 1545 until the end of the 16th century. In fact, this text on the art of preserving health is largely inspired by the School of Salerno, one of the first medical schools founded in the 9th century in Italy. It bears a very fine printer's mark depicting an eagle feeding its chicks.
