Gilt Bronze And Cloisonné Desk Clock In The Napoleon III Style
This gilt bronze and polychrome cloisonné enamel desk clock is a fine example of decorative metalwork from the second half of the 19th century. Four cabriole feet adorned with blue and white enamel support the timepiece. The rectangular base features finely chiseled acanthus leaf motifs and an abstract floral design in cloisonné enamel. The clock's base is composed of acanthus leaves forming scrolls, reminiscent of the Rococo style. The spherical bronze body is richly decorated with floral and geometric motifs in blue, white, turquoise, and burgundy cloisonné enamel. The circular porcelain dial features openwork gilt bronze hands, Arabic numerals, and a painted floral garland. It is enhanced by a circular row of rhinestones. A cherub, presiding over the helm of time like an allegorical figure, crowns the whole. Our piece combines technical refinement and luxury, characterizing decorative art objects intended for the elegant offices and boudoirs of the Belle Époque. Accompanied by its key, the clock is functional.
