"Maurice Romberg De Vaucorbeil - "before The Fantasia""
Maurice Romberg de Vaucorbeil (Schaerbeek, 1862 – Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1943) "Before the Fantasia" Watercolor 16.5 x 14.5 cm (26.5 x 19.5 cm with frame) Titled and signed lower right "Before the Fantasia / Maurice Romberg" Very good condition Viewable at the gallery. A Belgian artist with strong ties to Morocco, he resided there from 1887, first in Tetouan and then in Meknes. Maurice Romberg traveled throughout the country with the archaeologist Guy de la Martinière. He was later the first European to settle and live in Marrakech among the local population, wearing traditional dress. He painted Morocco, its people, and its architecture in a sensitive, artistic, and picturesque manner. Discreetly, hidden from view beneath his burnous, he painted scenes of royal processions, festivities, architecture, and landscapes with great finesse, particularly in his watercolors. He exhibited in Paris, Brussels, and London. Our watercolor is titled "Before the Fantasia" and may be related to the artist's large and beautiful watercolor, "Fantasia before Moulay Hassan," held at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris.
