Chinese Shoushan Stone Scholar’s Seal — Liu Hai With Money Toad On Wealth Bag, C. 1930s
Hand-carved in Republican-era China (c. 1930s), this scholar’s seal in creamy Shoushan stone depicts Liu Hai (劉海) with his money toad Jin Chan (金蟾). The immortal sits on a tied wealth bag as the toad advances with a coin—an enduring Chinese blessing for prosperity and good fortune. The warm stone with natural red veining is polished to a soft sheen; the carving is crisp and rounded, with carefully modelled drapery, cords, coins and toad texture. The base retains a red seal field from use. Shoushan, from Fujian, is one of China’s Four Great Seal Stones, prized for compact grain and refined polish.
