Pulley Stirrup For A Weaving Loom, Animated By A Mask From The Djimini Culture, Ivory Coast
WEAVING LOOM PULLEY BRACKET with DO MASK
Djimini culture, Ivory Coast
First half of the 20th century
Wood with crusty patina
H: 14.5; W: 6.5 cm
Single-piece wooden pulley, carved with a Do mask, characterized by an anthropomorphic face with buffalo horns. The chin is included in the bracket and its neck is openwork. It has a pair of small pointed ears.
Do is both a sacred principle—a symbol of order, wisdom, and social cohesion—and an initiatory society. The Do mask is the physical manifestation of this force and these values, and ensures the link between the world of the living and that of the ancestors.
