Pulley Stirrup For A Weaving Loom, Animated By A Hornbill Head, Senufo Culture, Ivory Coast

WEAVING LOOM PULLEY BRACKET with HOOKED HEAD
Senufo culture, Ivory Coast
Late 19th–early 20th century
Wood
H: 18; W: 9 cm

Single-piece wooden pulley, carved with a stylized bird's head reminiscent of a hornbill, topped with a large carved crest. The bracket has two incised sawtooth friezes.

Old handwritten collection label: 42.

The hornbill is considered a true spiritual force and protector. It acts as a messenger between the world of the living and the spirit world. It is therefore a symbol of speech and the transmission of wisdom.
