"Horst Kerstan - Ceramic, Glazed Stoneware From 1968"
Glazed stoneware vase by Horst Kerstan. Dated 1968. Horst Kerstan (1941-2005) is a major figure in contemporary German ceramics. Trained in Europe but deeply influenced by Japanese aesthetics, which he discovered during stays in Japan and through his encounter with Shōji Hamada and his exchanges with Bernard Leach, he successfully fused the rigor of Western forms with Eastern techniques, notably anagama firing and raku. His work is characterized by refined forms, innovative interplay of materials and glazes, oscillating between sobriety and expressiveness. Kerstan left a lasting mark by creating a dialogue between tradition and modernity in ceramic art.
