A southern French painter and student of Magaud and Cabanel, this great artist participated in the Salon des Artistes Français from 1883. His works are found in numerous museums, including those in Carpentras and Marseille, and he also painted the ceiling of the Café Riche in Marseille. This beautiful painting, with its excellent subject, is in very good original condition, never restored. Its attractive craquelure adds to the charm of this fine period piece, which still retains its original oak leaf frame. Note the transparency and quality of the glazes on the model's skin.
