Terracotta Statue Of Bacchus As A Child Riding A Goat. (after Clodion)
A terracotta group depicting the infant Bacchus riding a goat, accompanied by a putto and eating bunches of grapes. Scattered on the base are vine leaves and grapes. The group rests on a terracotta base with a beautiful antique gilt patina, and the figures themselves have a natural patina. The piece is in excellent original condition and is signed CLODION. 19th century. Claude Michel, known as Clodion, was born in 1738 in Nancy and died in 1814 in Paris. A student of JB Pigalle, he became famous for his mythological groups and bacchanalian scenes in honor of Bacchus, the god of wine, revelry, nature, and festivities. His works are held in the museums of Agen, Nancy, the Louvre, Rouen, and Versailles.
