A superb oil on panel, signed lower right by Joseph-Victor Communal, depicting a view of the snow-covered Savoyard village of Peisey near the Vanoise National Park, bathed in delicate winter light. Communal, a landscape painter from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, was one of the finest interpreters of Alpine landscapes.
His works are distinguished by a luminous palette, a dense and vibrant handling of paint, and a remarkable sensitivity to mountain light. In this painting, the artist captures all the poetry of an isolated hamlet under the snow, dominated by the bluish slopes and pinkish peaks of the Alps. The calm atmosphere and the starkness of the landscape perfectly convey the painter's mastery in depicting high-mountain winter scenes.
