"Bronze Sculpture "the Hen With The Golden Eggs" Signed Goelzer – Late 19th Century"
This bronze sculpture with a brown patina, entitled "The Hen with the Golden Eggs," signed Goelzer Paris, delicately and symbolically depicts Jean de La Fontaine's famous tale. The sculpture portrays the peasant in despair after killing the hen that laid a golden egg every day. Blinded by greed, he decides to kill her to discover the secret of her wealth and obtain all the eggs at once. Upon opening it, he finds nothing exceptional inside… and thus loses his daily source of fortune. The hen lies between his legs, the eggs at his feet, and he holds a knife in his right hand. This bronze reveals great technical mastery. Through its poetic realism, the artist transforms a fable into a sculpted lesson, timeless and universal. The Goelzer Foundry, founded by Philippe Goelzer (1816–1881), was renowned for its finely chased bronze creations, often associated with pieces in the Napoleon III style. She collaborated notably with Poumaroux, another Parisian craftsman, to produce prestigious objects such as torchères, chandeliers, and decorative sculptures. *********Period: Late 19th century.
