Saint Apostle, Southern Germany, Late 17th Century
Saint Apostle, Southern Germany, late 17th century.
Our Swiss pine sculpture depicts a strong man, one foot resting on a rock, holding an open book in one hand. We can surmise that he held an object in his other, slightly open hand. Who could this saint be? Paul, who has lost his sword; Philip, without his cross; or perhaps Saint James the Greater, without his pilgrim's staff? The question remains open, but this does not detract from the great beauty and refinement of our formerly polychrome sculpture.
