Vietnamese Lacquer Cups & Saucers With Goldfish, Signed Thanh Le, Mid-20th Century

Charming set of four Vietnamese lacquer cups and saucers, each hand-painted in gilt with graceful goldfish and aquatic plants on a deep red ground.

Two cups are marked in gilt 越南成禮 (“Vietnam – Thanh Lễ”), and two with 造禮成 (“Made by Thanh Lễ”), confirming manufacture by the Thành Lễ lacquer workshop — one of Vietnam’s best-known producers of fine lacquerware, active in Saigon from the 1950s to the 1970s.

The undersides are black lacquer, with the same inscriptions beautifully rendered in gold characters. Goldfish are traditional symbols of prosperity, harmony, and abundance in Vietnamese art.
