Virgin And Child In Limestone – France, Gothic Period (14th – 15th Century)
Important limestone Virgin and Child, sculpted in the late 14th or early 15th century, a remarkable example of French Gothic sculpture. The Virgin, standing, presents the Infant Jesus resting on her right arm. The whole is distinguished by the softness of the modeling, the suppleness of the drapery and the traces of ancient polychromy still visible on the surface. The head, previously reattached, is well in place. Some losses and slight alterations related to time do not detract from the spiritual force and elegance of the work. At 105 cm in height, this sculpture exudes a presence marked by serenity and devotion, typical of Marian representations of the Gothic period. French work, probably from a workshop in northern or central France. Height: 105 cm Limestone Gothic period, 14th – 15th century
