Louis XV Solid Oak Commode, Late 18th Century – Loire Valley
This superb solid oak commode, dating from the late 18th century, perfectly embodies the refinement of the Louis XV style. It opens with three drawers adorned with finely chiseled bronze handles featuring foliage motifs, in the pure Rocaille tradition.
The wooden top, molded with an elegant bec de corbin edge, highlights the graceful curves of the design, while the legs end in charming snail-shaped scrolls, known in French as pieds bigorneaux—a hallmark of this period.
Crafted by a cabinetmaker from the Loire Valley, this commode reflects exceptional craftsmanship. The careful selection of oak, the precision of the joinery, and the delicacy of the proportions reveal the artisan’s intent to create a piece that was both sturdy and harmonious, built to endure. Handed down through generations, it has been lovingly maintained and remains in remarkable condition.
The commode has recently undergone a gentle aerogommage restoration, a traditional technique in which a fine natural abrasive is projected at low pressure. This delicate process cleans the wood thoroughly without damaging it, revealing the beauty of the oak grain and its light, natural hue while preserving its original patina.
All three drawers have been cleaned and slide smoothly. The piece is ready for use and will blend beautifully into a classic, country-chic, or contemporary interior.
