Caryatid Portico Clock Return From Egypt - Empire Period - Consulate
Empire period clock in mercury-gilt bronze, with a beautiful architectural harmony and great decorative richness. The composition rests on a rectangular molded base supporting the circular movement framed by two caryatids draped in the antique style, carefully executed. The upper openwork pediment is decorated with a central torch, symbol of light and knowledge, surrounded by two facing swans spitting delicate floral garlands. Below the movement, a second pediment depicts two winged Victories in a symmetrical and balanced composition. The whole expresses the cardinal virtues of imperial art: glory, beauty and balance. The openwork pendulum, decorated with an eagle holding a thunderbolt, reinforces the symbolic and sovereign aspect of the piece. The mercury gilding, luminous and well preserved, testifies to remarkable craftsmanship. Thread movement, in perfect working order, not recently serviced. Condition: very good, original gilding, slight wear The candlesticks visible in the photographs are not included. They are offered separately – see my other listings.
