Since the Middle Ages, apothecaries have ordered jars according to their needs to preserve and store pharmaceutical products. Their complex and organic composition requires being protected from light, humidity, dust, and insects. The pots therefore play an essential role in the preservation of their pharmaceutical contents. The variety and remarkable nature of Mr. Jacques Bousquet's deposit allow us to describe most of the pots that could appear and be used in a Montpellier or southern apothecary between the 16th and 18th centuries. The ornamentation of the pots has an aesthetic and informative role: The painted decoration – and very elaborate for some pots, is mainly intended to highlight the products presented in the window of the apothecaries. The inscriptions, when they are also painted, provide very precise information on the nature of the contents. Intrinsic to the ornamentation of the pots, the manufacturing process (firing, enameling, etc.) is also decisive in ensuring the preservative qualities of the containers.
