Tony Tollet studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Lyon from 1873. He won the Prix de Paris in 1879 and spent three years at the Académie des Beaux Arts where he was a student of Alexandre Cabanel, Luc Olivier Merson and Albert Maignan. He won the second Grand Prix de Rome in 1885. He returned to live in Lyon and spent the rest of his life there. In February 1909, a fire in his studio caused the loss of a large number of his early works. The portrait we present is therefore a rare testimony to the work of his early years.
