Albert Bitran (1931-2018), French painter, engraver and sculptor. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Bitran came to Paris at the age of 17 to study architecture, which he quickly abandoned to devote himself to painting. At the time of the first solo exhibition of his geometric works, in 1951 at the Arnaud Gallery, a meeting place for the avant-garde of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, he was only 20 years old, and he participated in numerous events including the first abstract art exhibition in Caracas and "Divergences" in Paris at the Babylone Theater. In 1958, Albert Bitran married and obtained French nationality. After the series "Les Noirs", oils on paper, exhibited in Mexico City in 2008, then in various cultural centers in France, Bitran continued this research on large canvases that he exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in London in 2010 ("Obliques") and 2011, at the Tuiliers Gallery in Lyon in 2012 ("L'Erosion des Noirs"), at the cultural center of Mont-de-Marsan in 2013 ("Méandres") and also at the Pompidou Center.
