Large pastel depicting Andromeda chained to the rock, awaiting her deliverance by Perseus. Ethiopian princess, daughter of King Cepheus, she is a victim of her mother Cassiopeia's pride. Exposed on a rock to be devoured by a sea monster, she is narrowly saved by Perseus, whose wife she will become. Signed lower right A. BARRÈ, probably the figure painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1875. cf. Bénézit T.1, p.461 Art Nouveau frame currently being restored. 95 x 37 on view.
