"Empire Table With Palmettes, Probably Berlin / Gotha, Circa 1820/25"
This oval Empire coffee table rests on two stylized palm-shaped legs, partly gilded and partly ebonized. The base and oval top are veneered in mahogany and enriched with friezes of kymation and rope. The distinctive design, particularly striking in profile, reflects the contemporary fascination with Egyptian motifs that followed Napoleon's campaigns at the turn of the century. Provenance: Philippe Farley Antiquités, November 1990; Carole Harris, River Ranch, Central Valley, California, June 2025. A suite of furniture is known from Friedenstein Castle in Gotha, including a table and a drop-leaf secretary decorated with carved palm motifs (cf. Luthmer-Schmidt, Empire und Biedermeier Möbel).
