Meissen: Porcelain Musician Monkey, The Flutist, 20th Century
Artist: Meissen
Very pretty porcelain edition sculpture with polychrome decoration from the famous MEISSEN manufactory. The figurine represents an anthropomorphic monkey playing the transverse flute, from the series Les Affenmusikanten (the musician monkeys), created around 1753 by the sculptor Johann Joachim Kaendler for the Meissen manufactory. He is dressed in 18th-century fashion: powdered wig, long white coat decorated with orange lapels and gold embroidery, flowered waistcoat decorated with purple patterns, turquoise blue breeches, white stockings and visible hairy bare feet, marking the comical contrast between humanization and animality. The monkey holds the flute with both hands, arms slightly raised, in a dynamic and graceful pose. The base is rocky, white, decorated with golden highlights. These pieces humorously parodied the manners and fashions of the court, by representing monkeys dressed like aristocrats playing instruments. They illustrate the whimsical and refined spirit of German Rococo, mixing satire and technical virtuosity.
