Covered tankard in solid silver (STERLING 925S), made in Denmark in the early 20th century in a Baroque-Revival/historicism idiom. The rounded body is repoussé-worked and chased with bold acanthus scrolls and fully open blossoms set against a finely stippled/pebbled ground, heightening the sculptural relief. A smooth moulded rim provides a crisp visual break above the lavish ornament.
The hinged lid, richly chased, is topped with a seated lion holding a ball that serves as the finial. The centre carries an applied medallion with a crowned monogram (the inner lid shows a cartouche with the Danish three-lions device), indicating a presentation or special commission. Both the lid interior and the vessel interior are gilded (vermeil)—the traditional finish for drinking pieces and a refined luxury detail.
The tankard stands on three cast lion feet, each with a ball under its paw, and features a thick, comfortable handle with a discreet thumb rest. The piece displays meticulous workmanship throughout: crisp modelling, varied chasing textures, clean solder joints and a well-fitted hinge.
Marks to the base: “SVT” (unidentified maker) and STERLING 925S, the Scandinavian practice confirming high-grade silver. Very good condition with minor wear and an attractive, even patina.
Weight: 825 g.
