Pewter shouldered pitcher, plinth foot, straight heel cup and tasseled thumb.
Control hallmark: crowned C / (178)8 / R. (R for Rouen)
Hallmark of Antoine Félix LOISEAU received master between 1767 and 1770: crowned spread-eagle / AFL
Rare gauging hallmark with cross pattée affixed twice.
Height: 22.3 cm.

Rouen, unlike many production centers, the control hallmark was updated very regularly; this allows precise dating.
Remember that these pitchers were the official wine measures of the Ancien Régime. Those used in public places had to be checked by inspectors-gaugers who affixed a stamp certifying that the pitcher complied with the current gauge. This is the case of the pitcher presented here.
