"Carved Wood Panel Altarpiece Saint Pierre Paradis Oak Attributes "

Saint Peter under an arcade – carved oak panel, Northern School, circa 1600 Saint Peter standing, haloed, walking under an architectural arcade. He holds a large bunch of keys and a book, his traditional attributes. Relief with successive planes, drapery with long broken folds; the semicircular arch is highlighted with radiating voussoirs. Beautiful old brown patina. Writing mixing Gothic survivals and Renaissance accents: short face and beard in triangular locks, angular folds, but architectural setting and radiating halo. The relief remains contained, designed for integration into woodwork. Readable tool frankness in the backgrounds and on the edges; key with pear-shaped ring and rectangular bit typical of Nordic workshops around 1600. Comparable to the figures of apostles on altarpieces, pulpits and stalls of Northern France and Southern Flanders, late 16th – very early 17th century. Related to Flemish tabernacle doors where the architecture frames walking saints. Northern School (Northern France / Southern Flanders) 1580–1620. Monoxyl oak carved in relief. Old patina/varnish; visible tool marks; edges showing old wear consistent with an old woodwork assembly. Height 42 cm; width 25 cm; thickness 3 cm.
