"Large Antique Orientalist Damask Tablecloth With Elephants, Tigers, Exotic Hunting Monogram, 19th Century"
Superb and rare linen damask tablecloth with orientalist decoration, illustrating a scene of a tiger hunt on elephant back, surrounded by palm trees, horsemen and fabulous animals. The decoration, woven with a luminous and refined relief, evokes the great damasks of the 19th century, Napoleon III period, a time when the fascination for the Orient and India inspired prestigious French manufacturers such as Charvet in Lyon or Le Jacquard Français. In the center, an antique monogram hand-embroidered in red underlines the elegance of the linen and its belonging to a mansion trousseau. The texture of the fabric, fine and shiny, suggests a linen enhanced with silk, typical of luxury productions intended for receptions. Period: Second half of the 19th century (circa 1860–1880) Probable origin: France, large Lyon or Normandy weaving Dimensions: approximately 3.00 m x 2.32 m Material: linen damask (fine thread, linen/silk blend) Monogram: red hand embroidery, intertwined letters Condition: very good general condition, some slight signs of age, but not serious, 2 micro imperfections on the border.
