Large Italian Baroque Mirror In Gilded Wood With Gold Leaf, Late 18th Century

Italian Baroque mirror in carved wood gilded with gold leaf. The decoration, punctuated by acanthus scrolls and flowers, becomes lighter around an angel's face in the lower part. The peaceful expression and balanced composition reflect the evolution of the Baroque towards a more ornamental style at the end of the 18th century. The gilding, carried out using the traditional technique with a background of gesso and red plate, retains a nuanced patina highlighting the relief and richness of the work. The later beveled glass was probably replaced at the beginning of the 20th century. This large mirror illustrates the expertise of the Italian workshops of this period.
