André Galland (1886–1965):
André Galland, son of a cloth manufacturer, was a French designer and illustrator. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1933 in recognition of his work, which had a significant influence on his era. An eclectic artist, he also created earthenware, posters, and lithographs that are now sought after by collectors. After studying at the Collège Rollin, the École des Arts Décoratifs, and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he abandoned his preparations for the Prix de Rome to embark on a career. He turned to journalism and earned his spurs as a sketch artist at Paul Renouard. A few years later, he became his student at the École des Arts Décoratifs. He knew how to make the most of an original drawing method known as “des pointes d'os” (bone points), which produced true pencil reporters, skilled at photographing a lively scene in the blink of an eye. Galland defined himself as a “sketch reporter.” This is precisely the spirit of his work at Manufacture Henriot.
