Stoneware Vase With Oxblood Glaze By Eugène Baudin, Circa 1900
Artist: Eugène Baudin
Stoneware vase with oxblood glaze by EUGÈNE BAUDIN, circa 1900 Important ovoid-shaped glazed stoneware vase with powerfully modeled lines and a spectacular glaze combining oxblood red and deep turquoise. The raised decoration, all drips and ribs, evokes the fluid movement of the material, giving the vase an almost organic sculptural presence. The flamboyant glaze, oscillating between crimson red, copper blue and purplish flashes, testifies to a perfect mastery of high-temperature firing effects. The contrast between shiny and matte areas, metallic reflections and deep nuances, gives the whole a vibrant and changing character. Signed E. Baudin / Briare under the base, this vase is characteristic of the personal work of Eugène Baudin, a self-taught ceramist influenced by Japanese research and the rediscovery of oriental flambé glazes. A former Communard deputy who became a potter, Baudin developed a powerful and atypical work in Briare at the crossroads of the arts of fire and plastic expression.
