First stay in Paris in 1795 to train in the studio of the miniature painter Jean-Baptiste Isabey, before 1797 until 1806 he trained at the Kunstakademie in Munich.
Around 1806-1819, a second stay in Paris took place to continue his training in Isabey's studio.
He received his first commissions as a miniature painter and copyist.
In 1819, he returned home to Munich, where he worked as a miniature painter at court.
Between 1819 and 1828, Heigel stayed regularly between Germany and Paris. In 1828, he went to Berlin, then to Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt, where he settled permanently.
