The striated and symmetrical decoration follows the shape of the outline of the hollowed-out eyes, in elongated almonds, accentuating the intensity of the pleated gaze, also thanks to the effect of alternating and mixing the dark and light patina, with a point of contrast to the horizontality, the triangular nose in relief emerging from the point of connection of the two eye cavities, splitting the face in two. And the mouth in a ridge, in opposition to the uniformity of the striates, the square of the mouth, from where the spectator expects to hear the voice. The ensemble of striated motifs, the almond shape of the eyes and the prominent square of the mouth, commonly arouses ambiguity with the Kifwébé masks of the neighboring Sangye ethnic group. Luba masks are generally distinguished by more rounded features, such as this mask symbolically evoking the lunar star, with feminine connotations, associated with the spirit world.
