Godefroid Devreese (1861-1941)
Godefroid Devreese , is a famous Belgian sculptor , born on August 19 , 1861 in Kortrijk , in a family of artists .
He is the son of Constantin Devreese , statuary sculptor and Virginie Van de Wiele , music teacher .
Godefroid Devreese began his training at the Academy of Courtrai .
He then moved to Brussels and continued his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1881 to 1886 .
There he was taught by the sculptors Eugene Simonis and Charles Van der Stappen .
In 1884, he moved to Schaerbeek , which he did not leave until 1939 .
To complete his training , the sculptor undertook numerous trips to England, Spain , Italy , the Netherlands and Paris .
He acquired a solid reputation as a sculptor and medalist , which opened the doors to numerous exhibitions .
Considered an innovator in the art of medals , he worked for the Royal Mint of Belgium .
Godefroid Devreese participated with Victor Horta in the creation of several monuments .
Victor Horta drew up the plans for the workshop that Godefroid Devreese would occupy , located on Rue des Ailes in Schaerbeek .
Godefroid Devreese was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium .
His career was rewarded by numerous prizes and honorary distinctions .
He also distinguished himself by the creation of monuments .
From his time in Kortrijk , we remember the Groeninghe Monument , commemorating the Battle of the Golden Spurs .
Among other monumental works , the Monument of the Benefactors in Schaerbeek and the Monument to Emile Henricot in Court-Saint-Etienne .
He is also the author of numerous bas-reliefs .
The sculptor died in Brussels on August 31 , 1941 .
