Set Of Three Blown Glass Apothecary Bottles, France, 19th Century
A beautiful set of three molded blown glass apothecary bottles, each with its original ground glass stopper and bearing a polychrome enamel label decorated with floral garlands and colored frames typical of 19th century pharmacies. The inscriptions, of Latin origin, refer to ancient medicinal preparations: OL. LIMACUM (Oleum Limacum) – Slug oil, formerly used as an emollient and soothing agent for the respiratory tract. ESS. ALEXIPH. ST. (Essentia Alexipharmica Stomachica) – Tonic and digestive essence, known as “alexipharmic,” believed to prevent infections or poisoning. LIQ. AMON. CARB. (Liquor Ammonii Carbonici) – Carbonated ammonia solution, used as a stimulant and expectorant. Each bottle subtly illustrates the careful aesthetics of the pharmacies of yesteryear: harmonious proportions, transparent glass, and delicate hand-painted decoration.
