Object description :

"Fishermen At The Foot Of The Tivoli Waterfalls. Joseph Vernet (avignon 1714 - Paris 1789) & Workshop"
Period, late 18th centuryOil on canvas and its original stretcher. Presented in a beautiful Louis XVI frame in carved and gilded woodDimensions with its frame: 95 x 115 cm. The canvas alone: 80 x 100 cmFamous for his sea views, bathers and waterfalls (notably Tivoli near Rome) Joseph Vernet was able to assimilate his study of the paintings of Claude Gellée Le Lorrain and his apprenticeship with Pannini and then Manglard. It is reported that it was upon his arrival in Marseille that Joseph Vernet felt a profound upheaval in front of the sea, redoubled later, during a storm at sea before arriving in Rome. It was on the occasion of the commission from Louis XV in 1753 that Vernet particularly demonstrated the greatness of his talent: in the series of Ports of France, he represented with a constant concern for truth the different urban aspects of our coastline (see the paintings exhibited in their quasi-totality in Paris at the Musée National de la Marine, deposit of the Louvre museum). Keen to represent in these ports the architecture as well as nature, Vernet also took care to humanize these views depicting the common people, merchants, sailors, fishermen in a lively and fanciful activity. This concern is omnipresent in his work. In storms and thunderstorms, a man always tries to oppose the unleashing of the elements. In a more peaceful climate, our painting thus depicts fishermen in the foreground while the background is located in Tivoli in front of the large waterfall and silhouetted against the sky, an ancient architecture. There are several versions of this painting, all executed after the "prototype" of Claude Joseph Vernet currently in the collections of the Birmingham Museum of Art. This composition was a great success and Vernet and his workshop painted a number of them to satisfy a strong demand from collectors. Very good condition of conservation.
