Large bronze medal, Saint Ignatius of Loyola and Saint Francis Xavier, 17th century
This octagonal medal depicts on its obverse Saint Ignatius of Loyola, one of the founders and first Superior General of the Society of Jesus. His head turned toward a radiant medallion around the letters IHS, he holds a book inscribed with "AD MAIOR(em) DEI GLORIA(m)" (for the greater glory of God, the Jesuit motto) and "REGVL(ae) SOC(ietatis) IES(u)" (rules of the Society of Jesus). Around the edge: "S(anctus) IGNAT(ius) LOIO(la) SOC(ietatis) IESU F(undator)" (Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus).
The reverse depicts Saint Francis Xavier, Jesuit and missionary. Around the edge: "S(anctus)·FRANC(iscus)·XAVER(ius)·S(ocietatis)·I(esu)·IND(iae)·ET·IAP(oniae)·APO(stolus)" (Saint Francis Xavier, Society of Jesus, apostle of India and Japan).
Very good condition, partially brown patina.
