Edouard d'Apvril attended the Lycée de Grenoble and was a pupil of Félix Cottavoz.
He moved to Paris, where he studied with Isidore Pils and Horace Vernet. In 1868, his first submission to the Paris Salon (Young Girl at Her Toilet and Portrait of a Young Man) was accepted. He would attend regularly thereafter until 1885.
After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts, he returned to Grenoble to devote himself to his art.
Inspired by the Flemish and Dutch masters he copied in his early years at the Grenoble Museum, he traveled to Holland in 1887. He frequented the circle of painters who met on Sundays in Proveysieux.
He lost his sight in 1918.
Edouard d'Apvril is buried in the Saint-Roch cemetery in Grenoble.
