Egypt, Late Period or earlier (New Kingdom)

H. 2.1 cm
Carnelian
Good condition; wearable as a pendant

Provenance: Collection of a prominent Parisian dealer (1970s–1990s)

This amulet represents the goddess Ma’at, deity of Truth and Justice, embodying the balance of the universe. She is shown here in her typical posture, seated on the ground with her knees drawn up. Egyptian dignitaries were sometimes depicted wearing small figures of Ma’at around their necks to signify that their conduct was righteous.

Despite the small size of the piece, the overall design and the modeling of the facial features are remarkably precise. Given its exceptional quality, this object should be regarded as a true masterpiece of Egyptian glyptic art.
