"Medal Dedicated To Emperor Charles V By The City Of Nuremberg. 1521"
Medal dedicated to Emperor Charles V by the city of Nuremberg. 1521Albrecht Dürer (design) Hans Krafft (execution) Silver Nuremberg (Germany) 1521The city of Nuremberg commissioned this medal in honor of the new Emperor Charles V, to commemorate his first Imperial Diet, which was to be held there in 1521. Albrecht Dürer designed a model that was executed by the engraver Hans Krafft. The young Charles, aged twenty, is depicted surrounded by the arms of the imperial territories and accompanied by the motto of the House of Austria, the eagle. However, the Diet was ultimately not held in Nuremberg, but in Worms. This medal is usually made of pewter. The example shown is made of copper (could it have been made at the time or later? See the last photos of a pewter example).
