Othmar Brioschi was the eldest son of theatre painter Carlo Brioschi (1826–1895) and brother of Anton Brioschi (1855–1920). Initially trained as a theatre painter, he studied in Munich under Simon Quaglio (1795-1878), and from 1874 at the Munich Academy, where he studied figure painting under Ludwig von Löfftz (1845-1910) from 1876 onwards. From 1878 to 1880, he worked as his father's assistant in Vienna and exhibited his paintings at the Künstlerhaus. He became a member in 1879. He then studied until 1882 at the master school of landscape painting under Eduard von Lichtenfels and won the Grand Prix d'État in 1882 with a two-year stay in Rome. In 1885, Othmar Brioschi moved to Rome, which became his permanent residence. In 1887, Brioschi married Maria, known as Mimmy, daughter of the sculptor Heinrich Max Imhof, with whom he had two daughters.
The artist's strength lies in his excellent representation of the landscapes of the Rome region, which he renders in all possible atmospheres, with light effects and a strong colouristic effect.
