"Ancient Ruins After Jan Asselijn "
A series of four wash drawings on paper, made after the drawings of Jan Asselijn (1610-1652) and the engravings of Gabriel Pérelle (1604-1677), during the second half of the 17th century. This series presents two drawings in landscape format as well as two others in portrait format. The latter are inspired by the discoveries of the ancient ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii, during the second half of the 18th century, while being part of the vogue of the Grand Tours initiated from the middle of the 16th century and developed during the 18th century. These views represent respectively the Aquafarelle cave (or Egeria cave), a fountain near Loreto, a view of the Friscati aqueduct as well as the Palais Maioir (Domitian's palace on the Palatine Hill).
The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy preserves a series of engravings by Pérelle and Asselijn of which the four views presented here (
